Today's Indian Youth Problems

India is a developing nation and has over 70% of the total population under the age group of 40 years. About 40% of the population is aged between 13 to 35 years and citizens belonging to this age group can be defined as youth. Owing to the huge population of youth in India, it is often referred as a young nation. This young population of the country is the future of the country. However, there are several problems that Indian youth faces in their day-to-day lives, which include social, economical as well as in terms of education. With modernization and globalization, the youth of the country is facing even more problems.

Here are some of the major problems faced by the Indian Youth.

Indian Youth Problems

Education Problem of Indian Youths

Education is a major concern for the young Indians. The education system of the country is still following the 20th-century curriculum. Better education is the need of the hour and employment driven education is essential to curb the unemployment problem that the entire nation is facing. The youth wants skill based education and job placement. It should be a part of higher educational institution, and more importance should be laid on providing career-oriented courses. The education system of the country is based mainly on the bookish knowledge rather than on the real-life scenario. It is more about scoring better marks than gaining knowledge and skills to cope up with the changing scenario of the country.

Unemployment in Indian

Another major issue that most of the today’s youth face is unemployment. This issue is rising in the country and as per World Development Report 2013, 9% of males and 11% females between the age group of 15 to 24 years are unemployed. In addition, the global economic crisis has led to the rise of this problem. Even people with good educational qualification are unemployed in the country. The lack of jobs and growing competition has given rise to this issue. Even the education system is responsible for the escalation of this issue. The unemployment of young people in the labor market is high, due to their lack of marketable education and skills. As per the literary status of the country, the distinction in terms of the unemployment rate between literates and illiterates was significant where the unemployment rate was higher among the literates than illiterates. Also, the growing corruption has fueled this problem to a great extent.

Parental Pressure on Youth

Parental pressure is faced by every young population of the country. Most Indian parents want their children to be doctors and engineers, and this tradition started during the 80’s, which is still continuing. The number of engineers is growing so much that it has given rise to the unemployment problem in the country. Parents should understand that everyone cannot become an engineer or a doctor and stop pressurizing their children. They can do better in life if they are allowed to follow their passion. Pressurizing them can lead them to take drastic steps, owing to the fear of failure and not able to live up to the expectation of their parents.

Identity Crisis Issues

The advent of modernization and globalization has created the problem of identity crisis among the young individuals. They are often seen combating with westernization and Indian traditions. They are frayed between these partitions, which also prevents them from mixing with people. They are constantly seen fighting with their conflicting image. They want to uphold their age-old Indian traditions and at the same time they want to keep up with the Western World, live a modern lifestyle and walk hand to hand with the people of the rest of the world. In an attempt to enjoy both, most of the young Indians suffer from the identity crisis.

These are some of the major problems faced by the Indian youth. However, each of these problems can be solved with time, especially by improving the education system of the country. It needs to be more advanced so that the youth of the country can compete with the rest of the World. Only an educated youth can help in making India a developed nation and help others feel Proud to be Indian.
